Indo-Portuguese Museum in Kochi

The Indo-Portuguese Museum displays numerous artifacts that go back to colonial times. The idea behind this institution is to show how the Portuguese were strong inspiration in Kochi. 

A lot of effort has been made to bring together all valuable collections and give an example for the Indo-Portuguese Christian Art heritage that once existed in our country.

The museum was established with the leadership of late Dr. Joseph Kureethra who was the Bishop of Kochi. He strongly believed that it was necessary to preserve the heritage and showcase the priceless artifacts that once owned by Diocese.

The entire museum has five sections which is Procession, Treasure, Civil Life, Cathedral and Altar. One of the highlight is the altar which is made of teakwood and has been brought to this museum from the Church of Our Lady of Hope, Vypeen. Then there is a chasuble handed over from the Bishops house and a Processional cross made of silver as well wood brought from the Santa Cruz Cathedral. 

Some others display include the Franciscans Coat of Arms and the Monstrance dating back to 18th-19th century. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation have also made significant contributions to this museum and have been brought from the churches around Kochi. 

This includes sculptures, apparels used during colonial times and metal objects that are precious.

Open on all days except Monday and Public holidays
The first Thursday every month entry is free for all.

How to Reach Indo-Portuguese Museum in Kochi

The Ernakulum South junction railway station is located at a distance of 12 km from the Indo-Portuguese museum. As you leave the railway station you need to go left towards the Carrier Station. 

Make a left turn on the south junction and go to the Chittor road. Next make a left turn onto the Valanjambalam junction that leads you to the Ettumanoor-Ernakulam road. 

As you move on this road make a sharp turn at the Valanjambalam junction and then a right turn at the Pallimukku junction that leads to the Mahatma Gandhi Road.Move ahead on the Vikranth-Venduruthy Bridge and staying on old NH-47 you will pass the naval Base Entrance. 

Once you reach the Cochin port junction you will pass the Thoppumpady BOT Bridge and then you need to make a right turn at the bridge junction that takes you to the Aroor-Thoppumpad road. 

After passing the Adoration Chapel take a left and then a right taking you to the K.J. Herschel Road.Make a slight right turn on to the Ayman that will lead you to Bishop Kureethara road. You will pass the Pattalam Juma Masjid and as you move on you will spot the museum.
