Kolady Kalady Athirapilly Travel Itinerary

The lush green environment of Kerala is a beautiful sight and nature lovers would find this an ideal destination to explore. The traditions and the rich culture of this place make it quite distinct from any other place that you have been to. 

Come to discover the land of elephants in a small village of Kodanad, famous a pilgrim spot known as Kalady and at the end of day relax by the Athirapilly waterfalls.

Kalady to Athirapilly Itinerary

7:30 am: Start from your hotel at Kochi and head towards Kodanad. It’s located at a distance of 40Km from Kochi and you will require at least 90 minutes to reach the destination by bus or private taxi. If you want to save time then you can also opt for a train to reach Aluva station (28km) and from here you can hire a private transport.

9:00 am: Kodanad is a village with a rustic charm and is located on the banks of river Periyar. The major highlight of this place is the elephant training ground that is the only one to be seen in the whole of Kerala. The elephants are taken from the wild and are taught to be part of the temple festival or even for carrying logs of wood. 

They are accommodated in wooden compartments known as Elephant Kraal which can house up to four elephants. Tourists from different places come here just to have a sight of elephants basking in the sunlight or even swimming. Filmmakers as well as documentary directors are also seen coming here.

You also have a zoo as well as a Malayattoor Church in this village. The annual festival of this church is famous and is celebrated with great pomp. 

The zoo has some rear species of animals and they are mostly taken in as they are not able to survive on their own in the forest. The Government of India has placed Kodanad as the eco-tourism destinations with an intention to preserve its natural form.

11:00 am: Next you can make your trip to Kalady which is located at a distance of 13 km from Kodanad. It is a famous pilgrim spot and is the birthplace of the famous philosopher Adi Sankaracharya. This place is accessible to all from 7am to 7pm.

12:30 pm: From here you can continue to the famous Athirapally waterfalls which will take you an hour to reach. You can relax and get refreshed at the resort located here.

2:30 pm: Enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Athirapally waterfalls.

4:00 pm: Return back to your hotel at Kochi.
